Being a journalist is a wild ride, and an important job! It can be hard to feel understood. Sometimes we may experience strain and conflict in our relationships due to the toll of being in the field.

Reporting on events that bring you up close and personal to people going through trauma, covering dangerous situations in protest or war, or constantly having to be “on”, takes it toll - the effects of which can compromise your relationships and even your safety in the field.

It is common to feel physiological symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, muscle tension, headaches, sweaty palms, tunnel vision (intense focus), numbness, loss of appetite, increased appetite, or gastrointestinal issues before, during, or after an assignment. This is just your body communicating a need for safety.

If you have a career in journalism and are experiencing burnout, hopelessness, anxiety, or stress, you are not alone!

How our work together can help

Our work together will be collaborative, as you are the expert in your life. We will deconstruct unhelpful narratives such as physical symptoms, thoughts, or feelings that are interrupting how you want to feel as a Journalist and as a Human. Using a unique blend of narrative therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS) and nervous system work, you will learn the skills needed to regulate your body before, during, and after an assignment, while fostering understanding of what you need, how to advocate for those needs, and construct a secure sense of self.

We will get to know the stories of the various parts of you (the anxious part, the burned out part, the curious part, the compassionate part etc). As we get to know the stories of your parts, we will gain more insight of what your body and mind need and how to mobilize your ability to meet those needs. Creating a space for your stories to be heard offers room for the story you want for yourself to develop.

I am engaged with you and will not be a therapist who sits back and nods. However, I will make space for your story to be heard. Often our stories get undercut or buried by dominant expectations about how we “should be”. When we can share our story - we can begin to heal.

I may recommend adjunct treatment that can support your body and mind such as acupuncture, cranial sacral work, or sound bowl therapy.

If you are ready to rewrite your narrative, reach out for a free, 20 minute consultation to learn how we can work together.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi! I’m Elizabeth (she/her) and I am honored to help journalists recover from burnout and stress. With a background in journalism, I understand how conflicting it can be to witness events that cut deep due to the emotional impact they bring. The events in today’s climate highlight that impact even more. Whether it’s covering ICE, political rallies, school shootings, war, or protests, the value systems that you align with might be at odds with what is going on. This can multiply the impact covering these events has. Even decisions made by others about your work that compromise the vision and values you are trying to communicate, can impact mental health. You deserve a sacred place to talk about these impacts, and explore ways to support your body and mind in feeling safe.
